A very RARE Botanic Garden Spring Gentian or Gentiana Verna motif Bread and Butter plate. Spring Gentian was introduced in 1972 and retired very early in 1976. Spring Gentian was only used for a short period of time on bread and butter plates and in limited production making it one of the most hard to find Botanic Garden dishes.
This plate is in very excellent condition with a great overglaze transfer. There are only a few tiny minor short, shallow, and hard to see stacking marks in the white ground and a few off color kiln stilt marks on the back side. It has an unusual oval black 2nds ID mark often used on sample or one of a kind items. I suspect is was made for sale in Portmeirion's factory store after the motif was retired.
